Which products to choose? Choose the branded, certified quality, and recognized value microcements of DUROSTICK. Instructions for use Carefully follow the manufacturer’s instructions for use and the proper application methods of your chosen product. Everything can be fixed Repair any damage and failures of previous applications, by re-coating the surfaces, after their proper preparation. It is recommended to waterproof any walls and floors affected by rising damp with the brushable cementitious waterproofing mortar D-1, fortified with the acrylic emulsion D-20, or with the one-component, flexible and fiber-reinforced brushable waterproofing mortar D-1 FLEX of DUROSTICK. Ideal application conditions It is important to remember that we always apply products and systems in the right conditions. The ideal application temperatures are from +5°C to +30°C, while the relative humidity of the atmosphere should not exceed 65%. Avoid application in hot or frosty conditions. Patience is a virtue Please respect the cure times of microcements. If the microcement has not dried and hardened thoroughly, it is likely to cause failures in the final varnished surface. The specific problems are serious and their restoration will cost time and money. Use moisture measuring instruments to ensure the next stage of work. The internal moisture in the microcement should not exceed 5%. Cure times are lengthened when the coats are applied thick. Coloring & aesthetic results Dare to be different beyond the popular microcement colors that revolve around the shades of gray, by following the color charts from the relevant DUROSTICK’s coloring systems. Traditionally, in Aegean architecture, microcements are often left with a rough, somewhat textured finish. Nowadays, the texture can be adapted to individual aesthetic requirements and can either follow the traditional paths or create smooth, velvety textures. Varnishes for protection & decoration The protection varnishes for microcements yield matte, satin, or even gloss finish surfaces. The choice between them depends on aesthetics and the specificities of the application. Please note here that varnishes affect the ‘depth’ of the chosen color of the microcement, usually making it from less to much dark. The use of the micromolar water-based primer AQUAFIX will protect the colors from unpleasant changes and even surprises. In any case, it is the best practice to test-apply the varnish on an edge of the surface, before the final application on the entire surface. Top surface protection Although varnishes, especially those intended for use on floors, are extremely 32 hard and durable, dropping a sharp object or dragging furniture and chairs can damage them. It is recommended that furniture, tables, chairs, and anything else that can damage the varnished surface of the microcement to be fitted with felt bottoms on their feet that will protect the floor. In the kitchen area and especially on its counters, you should pay special attention regarding surface contact with very hot utensils. Use special utensil bases that protect the surfaces from burning. Cutting produce and items should be done on cutting surfaces so that the varnish on the surface is not scratched and damaged. Acidic traces from tomatoes, lemons, oranges, vinegar, etc. should be cleaned from your counters immediately after they come in contact with the surface. The protective varnishes that coat and waterproof the microcement surfaces are extremely resistant to wear and stress. The instructions for their protection are given so that they can remain like new for many years. Top surface cleaning The cleaning of the coated surfaces, as far as walls are concerned, is done with a damp cloth or sponge and mild household cleaners. Try DUROSTICK’s fully biodegradable line of BIOCLEAN cleaning products. Sweeping or vacuuming, and mopping with mild household cleaners, will keep your floors clean. Avoid using bleach or other harsh chemicals. There is a risk that they will affect the varnish and at best just dull it. The epoxy-based varnish is excluded from this tip since it is highly resistant to contact with more aggressive cleaning products. TIPS & TRICKS

Products such as DS-259 DECO MICRO RESIN, DS-256 FLEX VELVET, DS-258 DECO MICRO FLEX, POWDER COAT, STUCOFIX-P, STUCOFIX ELASTIC PUTTY, dB BLOCK are easily and efficiently applied in a short time in vertical and horizontal surfaces even on ceilings without the use of ladders or scaffolding. You can get the DECOLISS kit through the DUROSTICK points collection system. 33 If you desire to color the microcement in its mass, then, to the metered water amount, add the water-soluble pigments in powder form DUROCOLOR POWDER-C and mix thoroughly (3-4 minutes). In the colored water add the chosen type (only) white microcement. Mix with a low-rpm electric drill to homogenize the color and the microcement and create a colored, pasty mass, that is ready for use. Caution: For each microcement bag you mix, you should follow the same water -DUROCOLOR POWDER-C pigment recipe. The DUROCOLOR POWDER-C color creation system consists of preweighted bags of water-soluble pigments in powder form. The available colors are white and 48 more, in 250gr packages. Depending on the recipe (1 or 3 pigment bags), they yield 96 color chart colors. Coloring microcements Expansion joints Depending on the size, shape, and location (interior or exterior surface) where the microcement will be applied, it is necessary to create expansion joints. Expansion joints protect the coating from future cracking that usually comes from the expansions and contractions of the surfaces and the micro-vibrations of the soil. The joints are created around the perimeter, where the horizontal surfaces meet the vertical ones. Also, they are created in continuation of existing ones (followed through the new coating when applying over existing expansion joints), or anew, per 25-30 square meters of the coated surface. Fill the joints with the polyurethane sealant DUROFLEXPU. It seals effectively and due to its high flexibility, it ensures the absorption of expansions and contractions of the coated surfaces. PROTECTION VARNISHES FOR THE TOP SURFACE 36 Two-component, aliphatic polyurethane-based, water-soluble and odorless matte varnish. It presents exceptional hardness, high abrasion resistance, and durability against UV radiation. It does not yellow, even after several years from its application. Its application will preserve the colors and shades of microcement and microcement in paste form as well as natural stones. 39 CRACK ISOLATION SYSTEM DUROSTICK is the company that paved the way and quickly made these great products called microcements known to most people. It retrieved the product from historical architecture oblivion and, industrially perfecting it, and introduced it to the general public. During this journey, craftsmen with excellent application skills applied the product and helped to boost its reputation. The proper application of DUROSTICK microcements, all these years, gave many miles of decorated surfaces, without any real problems. However, as in any application, in the application of microcements, some failures were observed. Failures were usually due to the improper preparation of the substrates, the hasty applications that circumvent the curing times of the products, as well as the non-observance of the instructions for the preparation and use of the product. The most common problem that manifests when some of the above occur is that of cracked surfaces. In order to create ‘safer’ conditions in the application of the product and to ensure an excellent final result, DUROSTICK manufactured and has made available the innovative dB Block. dB Block is a crack-proof and vibration-proof product, able to protect the final surface of the microcement and maintain its excellent finish surface over time, without problems. In addition, on the surfaces it will be applied, it yields top grip conditions for the microcements with the substrate, and also waterproofs, thermally insulates and soundproofs as well. dB Block is a ready-to-use thixotropic paste. Apply it without primer, on properly prepared building substrates, on wood and metal surfaces, on aircrete surfaces, on existing floor surfaces made of mosaic or ceramic tiles, and on drywall surfaces. Suitable for use on interior and exterior surfaces, floors, and walls. It spreads easily with a stainless steel trowel, on the entire surface to be coated with microcement, in thickness from 2 to 3mm. Smooth it flat with the same trowel and with similar ease. It ‘receives’ and absorbs the expansions and contractions of the substrates, while at the same time it seals the substrate against rising damp. QUARTZ DECO aggregates • The application of QUARTZ DECO colors Mediterranean Coast and Aegean Mosaic on walls is not recommended. To apply these colors on floors, please consult our Technical Support Team. • Please make sure that the quartz aggregates are completely dry, as they are available in their factory sealed packaging, before mixing them with binding resins. • When choosing QUARTZ DECO aggregates, it is recommended to select from the same production batch to ensure a uniform aesthetic result. • The mixing of different grain size quartz aggregates reduces the gaps/voids that can form during the application of large grain size colors. QUARTZ DECO + QUARTZ DECO EPOXY • When the application is on floor surfaces that may be affected by rising damp or in swimming pools, bathrooms and showers, first waterproof the substrate using the flexible waterproofing mortar D-1 FLEX of DUROSTICK, available in white or gray color. • Swimming pools and fountains are filled with water, at least 7 days after the application completion. For additional protection, apply the two-component epoxy varnish in gloss finish DECOFIN EPOXY SF of DUROSTICK. The same product is necessary for the protection of the application when it concerns bathrooms or showers. • After all exterior pool applications, protect the applied product from intense sunlight, rain, and frost for up to 72 hours. • Low temperatures slow down the curing of the mixture, while increased temperatures speed it up. • Until fully cured, the product should not be exposed to moisture and dust. QUARTZ DECO + QUARTZ DECO PU • Do not apply if there is a chance of rain or frost within the next 72 hours. • Surfaces must not be cleaned with water before the application and must be completely dry during the application. • After the application on exterior floors is completed, protect the mixture from intense sunlight, rain, and frost for up to 72 hours. • Low or high temperatures change the curing time of the mixture. • The mixture must not be exposed to moisture and dust until it is fully cured. QUARTZ DECO + QUARTZ DECO HYBRID • When choosing QUARTZ DECO aggregates, it is recommended to select from the same production batch to ensure a uniform aesthetic result. • Protect for approximately 24 hours after the application completion the fresh surface from direct exposure to the sun and rain, as well as strong wind. • Low temperatures and/or high moisture levels will increase the curing time of the mixture. • To avoid the appearance of seams do not stop the application process on uniformed/large surfaces. • During the mixing process between the quartz aggregates and the QUARTZ DECO HYBRID resin, the color differs from the final surface color. The final color is formed after 3-5 hours. • On surfaces affected by increased moisture loads, and once the application is 58 TIPS & TRICKS completed and they are thoroughly dry, apply either the two-component polyurethane varnish DECOFIN POLYURETHANE or the acrylic varnish VISTA of DUROSTICK. • For application on substrates possibly affected by rising damp, consult with our Technical Support Team. • A 6.6kg resin container is suitable for a 20kg bag of QUARTZ DECO aggregates. • DUROSTICK also has available for purchase a 32lt mixing container, as well as specialty stainless steel trowels, suitable for these types of applications. Avoid mixing the products in metal container. • When mixing the binding resin with the QUARTZ DECO aggregates with grain size less than 2mm, it is recommended to wear protective glasses, clothing and gloves. • The mixture can be used for up to 10 days after its homogenization, as long as it is stored in a tightly closed container.
